Hot Work Safety Controls
Hot work involves working with ignition sources near combustible or flammable materials—for instance, doing welding, soldering, or cutting. Fires often result when workers complete a “quick five-minute job” in areas not intended for welding or cutting.
A hot work management program can help control or eliminate hot work hazards and risks. Establishing a hot work program involves developing policies and procedures and assigning responsibilities and accountabilities for all aspects of hot work. The goal is to determine where and when hot work is permitted, who authorizes the work to be performed, and how hot work activities are monitored.
Obtaining a hot work permit before performing the work is an important part of any hot work management program. The permit establishes guidelines for areas designated as hot work areas. Our hot work permit provides you with the tools needed to properly assess the area where hot work is conducted. Obtaining the permit will confirm that all precautions have been taken to prevent a potential fire in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards. However, the permit is just one part of an effective hot work program, which should also include applicable policies, procedures, training, and communication.
MSIG USA offers the following hot work resources:
- Hot Work Permit (available in digital and print format)
- Sample Hot Work Safety Program
Infrared Thermographic Inspections
Infrared inspection is an advanced precautionary maintenance program for electrical systems. It includes infrared testing, a non-destructive test method designed to detect poor connections, unbalanced loads, deteriorated insulation, or other potential problems in energized electrical components and systems.
Roof Inspections
Periodic roof inspections can uncover potential problems before they become emergencies and reduce your total roof system expenditures. For example, a roof inspection might uncover where roof surfaces have not worn evenly due to weather and other environmental exposures.
